Tulsa, April 24-25
(Former "Oil Capital
of the
World" and also my birthplace and home through college.)
Come
visit one of
the most livable, family-friendly cities in the USA, once home of
several oil tycoons. On the
way to Tulsa we will stop in Claremore,
OK and tour the fascinating Will Rogers Museum. Upon our arrival in
Tulsa we will drive by the Golden Driller, at
76 feet tall
it is
reportedly the tallest free-standing statue in the
world. After
checking into our motel, we will then drive to "The Farm" for dinner at
your choice of restaurants.
Afterward we will take an
evening tour of downtown Tulsa including a drive-by of the magnificent
new BOK
Center
(similar to the Sprint Center) then return
to our motel via the beautiful Riverside Drive (alongside
the
Arkansas River). A late evening
option for those who wish will be a
trip to an Indian casino.
After
a continental breakfast the next
morning, we will visit the Holocaust exhibit inside the new
Sherwin-Miller
Jewish Museum. Then we will drive by the
famous
Prayer
Tower on the Oral Roberts University campus on our
way to tour the Oklahoma Aquarium where
we will see
some giant sharks
along with
hundreds of other water
creatures. After lunch we'll tour the
magnificent Philbrook Art Museum, former home of Waite Phillips
of
the
Phillips Oil Co. family). Then it's on
to the beautiful Tulsa
Rose Garden which should be in full bloom. Next we'll
drive by
the Boston Ave. United Methodist Church with its 15-story tower
reaching
heavenward as we wind our
way through town to the Tulsa Air
and Space
Center. Here we will see some rare and historic
aircraft and some
hands-on displays; you can also go through
your own
countdown and
"launch" of a mock-up of a space shuttle.
On our return
trip home we will stop in Joplin for dinner.
